I hope this finds you well. It has been a while and I have some exciting news to share. Today, I am launching a fashion, beauty and lifestyle blog after many years of experience as a tastemaker and lifestyle expert in the media business. First it was AskMelissa, then PageDaily and now my blog, which is something very personal and special. The format is simple. I post a daily image followed by small tidbits of information. Many posts will offer valuable tips and product picks and will link to purchase. I am a lover of art and nature and will share images of people, places, and things that will inspire you. I will also make product suggestions that are useful and will save you time researching what is best. My passion has always been to share my discoveries with other women to enhance their every day life. Whether it’s advice on what new bag to buy and how to wear it, where to go on vacation, selecting the perfect lipstick, or trying the most effective workouts, think of me as your new best friend!

MM: Can you tell us a little bit about how you developed this signature workout?

If “hyaluronic acid” sounds to you like the last thing you’d want to put on your face and “ceramide” makes you think of pottery, you’re not alone. Unless you studied product labels as your foreign language of choice, it can be tough to figure out what all those science-y terms mean. Below, we break it down to the basics, highlighting five common skin care ingredients you’re bound to run into — and exactly what they do.

Hyaluronic Acid

What it is: A naturally occurring substance in the human body that regulates cell renewal, lubricates connective tissue and maintains skin’s moisture and elasticity.

What it does: When used topically, hyaluronic acid creates a moisture barrier on the skin, helping to make it smoother and softer. This ingredient is able to hold up to 1000x its own weight in water, thus producing amazing benefits for dehydrated skin. As an injectable, hyaluronic acid works as a plumper, filling wrinkles and fine lines. Because it is already naturally present in our bodies, hyaluronic acid is a safer alternative to synthetic ingredients and is less likely to be rejected as a foreign substance. The molecule, however, is quite large and can’t fully penetrate the outer layers of the skin to fill wrinkles when used topically.

MM: You began your career right out of high school and in no time logged record sales, including the highest sale in the history of Brentwood Park. Is there one particular sale or client you’ve worked with that stands out in your mind as most memorable?

JF: My favorite sale was that of a home in Brentwood Park. A “Lord” from England called up and said he wanted to buy a home for $15 million and his funds were in an offshore account in Barbados. Everything sounded hokey. But not only did I end up selling him a fifteen million dollar house, I sold him the house and then re-sold it for him for $30 million within two months!

Brows That Won’t Budge

If a perfect brow is what you’re after, you’ll need five key tools: Tweezers, cuticle scissors, a spooly brush, brow corrector in the form of a pencil, pen or powder and a little brow mousse. Start off by brushing the brows straight up with your spooly brush and snipping any strays that rise above the brow line. Next, use tweezers such as the Tweezerman Pointed Tweezer to pluck any strays hairs and shape brows into submission. Use a brow corrector product like the Dior Diorshow Brow Styler Ultra-Fine Precision Brow Pencil to fill in any sparse areas. Finish with a touch of the mousse to keep them in place all day.

All-Day Flawless Skin

For a glowy, healthy complexion the top five products are face primer, liquid foundation, under eye concealer, cream highlighter and face powder. Begin by smoothing on a face primer such as Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired By Carmindy Luminizing Face Primer. This will even out the skin’s texture and create a glow from within. Next, apply a liquid foundation all over the skin, including the eyelids and under the lower lash line. Buff into your hairline and slightly down the neck so you don’t get a line of demarcation. A Red Lip That Stays Out All Night

The big five in creating a red lip that lasts are a lip scrub, highlighter, lip liner, lipstick and powder. Start off by exfoliating the lips while you’re in the shower, using a little bit of white sugar and a wet hand towel. Lightly buff the lips so they’ll be smooth and ready for application later. When you’re ready to apply lip color, first rim the outside lip line with a cream highlighter to create a fuller looking pout. Now line and fill in lips with a red pencil matching your lip color. Apply matching lipstick and blot with a tissue. Add a very light dusting of powder to the lips, then swipe on the lipstick one more time. This application will keep lips red and ready for as long as you’re out and about.

Do you have a trick for helping your makeup stick around?

MM: Your new book, “Balance Your Life, Balance the Scale” is based on personal experience and talks about balance and the relationships between food, life, stress, weight, and happiness. Tell us how you felt out of balance and what you did to restore it.

JTY: Believe me when I tell you that when you choose to live your life by being in balance, you will release weight – both in your own life and on the scale. No gimmicks. No starvation. No impossible exercise plans – just a balanced approach that will improve every single part of your life. Being in balance reduces stress, and reducing stress helps you lose weight. It’s that simple. I know this because I’ve seen it happen for thousands of women, starting with myself.

Thirteen years ago, I overcame borderline diabetes and lost more than a hundred pounds, ironically when I decided to ditch dieting and all of the self-loathing that goes with it. Sure, I exercised and chose nutritious foods. But there was way more to it than that – that was just the beginning. I lost all that weight (and have kept the scale in balance for over a decade) by making a far more fundamental change than just cutting calories – I transformed my life by learning what it meant to actually love myself. I changed myself from the inside out – I found my anchor to keep me in balance. And by being in balance, the scale balanced itself.

MM: Cleansing and detoxifying your life is one of your big objectives. What are three tips to help get there.

JTY: There is tremendous value in undergoing a cleansing process that allows you to let go of the emotional and physical debris that contributes to a life out of balance. Here are some of the activities I suggest:

1. Do a food cleanse that rids your diet and your kitchen of the foods that serve no good purpose in your life, including fast food, junk food, foods that negatively influence your mood, and foods that trigger overeating.
2. Eliminate time vacuums by evaluating and getting rid of some of the things that unnecessarily suck time out of your life.
3. Take a look at your mindset and purify it of self-limiting beliefs and unhealthy thoughts that knock you off balance.

It’s hard to surprise a beauty editor, but when experts told us these out of the ordinary strategies for better hair, we almost didn’t believe them. Read on for their “who knew?” secrets to a more beautiful mane.

1. Brush Up

Wait, haven’t we filed the “100 strokes before bedtime” myth under Terrible Advice To Never Heed? Well, yes, but some brushing can actually be good for hair, says Hollywood hair treatment expert Philip B.

“You should always brush just before you shampoo,” says Philip, who explains that the scalp’s oil is hair’s natural conditioner. “A good brushing helps you make the most of your shampooing: It moves the natural oils off your scalp and down the hair shaft, where they’re needed. It revs up circulation and helps to loosen any dead cells or greasy build-up, so your shampoo can really do its work.”

Even curly hair should be brushed pre-shampoo, says Philip. Use a natural boar bristle brush, such as Philip B.’s Medium Round Hairbrush ($65, philipb.com), which is gentler on fine and textured hair than nylon brushes. And forget the 100 strokes; 10 or 20 should be plenty.

2. Add Color

Yes, the peroxide and ammonia in hair color can damage strands, but as long as you’re not making a drastic change (anything more than two levels lighter or darker than your current color), a fresh hue can actually make your mane shine brighter.

“Processed hair does truly shine differently than virgin hair,” says John Frieda International Creative Consultant Harry Josh, who we caught up with backstage at Zac Posen’s spring 2013 runway show. “Virgin hair can be very shiny and flaxen, but doesn’t hold texture very well. If you wave it, it goes very flat. Once you color the hair, it gives the hair a lot of hold and a lot of shine.”

Josh recommends applying hair color, such as John Frieda Precision Foam Colour ($11.99, drugstore.com), 24 hours before your big event for optimal richness and shine — and he did just that for three models at Posen’s show. If you’d rather put yourself in professional hands, Redken salons offer the oil-based, ammonia-free Chromatics color line, which actually strengthens hair follicles as it colors.

3. Eat Breakfast

You probably know that what you eat affects your hair’s health, but did you know that when you eat is just as important? Elizabeth Cunnane Phillips, who treats hair and scalp problems as a trichologist at the Philip Kingsley Clinic in New York, advises her clients to fill up “early and often.” That means “protein intake at breakfast and lunch are the key times for hair health.”

Why? Think about it: if your body only has a small amount of food energy available, it will use that energy to keep your heart, lungs and other essential organs working — hair is low-priority on the list. You want to send your brain the message that there’s plenty of fuel available to nourish your entire body, including the hair.

Phillips recommends starting the day with a balanced meal that includes complex carbohydrates and protein. Egg whites, yogurt, cottage cheese, fruits, multigrain bread and high-quality peanut butter are a few of her healthy hair picks.

4. Soothe Your Scalp

While most of us tend to fixate on scraggly split ends, the other end of the hair deserves equal TLC. “Ninety-nine percent of hair’s natural strength and beauty comes from the scalp,” says dermatologist Dr. Francesa Fusco, who works with haircare brand Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy. “Just as good soil is to a tree, a well-nourished scalp is the right foundation for strong, beautiful hair.”

Phillips, the Philip Kingsley trichologist, echoes this idea. “A healthy scalp creates a better environment to ensure healthy hair growth,” she says. She’s also a proponent of daily shampoos to keep the scalp clean and clear.

“I advise my patients to stick with a routine for an absolute minimum of a week to give the product time to work its magic,” says Dr. Fusco. “Of course, the longer you use it, the longer you will see continued benefits.”

Kiss those summer beach waves goodbye—straight hair is having a major moment this fall. But before you fry your ends with a flat iron, know that there’s a better way to get sleek strands with less damage. Here are some quick tips to save you time, energy and split ends.

The Blow Dyer — Your New BFF
With the right products and tools, you won’t need to flat iron after you blow dry–which means you’ll cut the amount of time you expose strands to heat.

Prep damp hair with a product like Bumble and Bumble Straight Blow Dry ($28, bumbleandbumble.com), which has a gel-like consistency that helps loosen your hair’s natural curves. (A similar product we love: Fekkai Coiff Controle Ironless Straightening Balm ($25, Beauty.com).)

Add an anti-frizz serum, such as Yes To Carrots Anti-Frizz Serum ($7.99, Yestocarrots.com), if your texture is coarse or prone to flyaways. This 99 percent natural cream uses avocado and mango butter to naturally soften and tame strands. And be thorough: “Frizz can be reduced by making sure the hair is completely dry before leaving the house,” says Harmonie Redman, a stylist at NYC’s Butterfly Studio Salon.

If you’re going for a pin-straight look, use a flat brush to blow out hair. Want a little movement and volume? Opt for a round brush. The bigger the brush, the bouncier the blowout.

Finish off with hairspray, like TIGI Catwalk Sleek Mystique Look-Lock Hairspray ($21, Drugstore.com), which has a blend of honeysuckle and lychee to resist humidity and keep locks sleek.

Enjoy Straight Strands For Days
Now that you’ve got those straight locks, focus on making them last—after all, fewer blowouts means less damage in the long run. Swap your daily moisture-stripping wash for dry shampoo, like Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo Spray ($21, Beauty.com).

To prevent frizz and static during sleep hours, switch to a silk pillowcase. Silk prevents split ends, doesn’t tangle hair like cotton (cotton actually tugs at individual strands, causing breakage), and even helps reduce the production of sebum, decreasing the chance of greasy hair.

And most importantly, hands off. “Avoid touching your hair frequently, as that can create friction,” Redman explains.

If You Must…Still can’t resist the flat iron? At least protect your hair. “Look for a treatment-based product, such as Kérastase Fibre Architecte ($42, Kerastase-usa.com), to apply to dry hair when using hot irons to insure optimal hair health. This not only protects your hair from the heat but also promises healthier hair over time, as the heat actually helps the nourishing ingredients penetrate deep into the cuticle layer of your hair.”

Will you forego the straightener for healthier, happier strands?

BeautyBooked, a new online search and appointment booking service, was launched last night at Caudalie Vinotherapie Spa at the Plaza and we were in attendance. Born from the frustration of having to call individual salons and spas for individual appointments, BeautyBooked streamlines the beauty appointment booking process.

Founders Ritika Gill and Hillary Hutcheson were working a late night at L’Oreal one evening when an eleventh-hour meeting with senior event leaders came on the calendar. Needing to fix their messy brows and chipped nails fast, the industry insiders scrambled to make last minute appointments. As Hutcheson says, “We can book our dinners on OpenTable, our doctors appointments on ZocDoc— why is it so difficult to book beauty?”

Conceived of just a mere four months ago, the pair has worked diligently to get BeautyBooked up and running. The website allows members to search, explore, and discover salons and spas from a curated list according to service, location, and preferred date and time. It offers expert reviews and helps members find last-minute availabilities. Spas include Caudalie Vinotherapie Spa, Drybar, and TenOverTen. We tried it out for ourselves last night and the process is simple. We can’t wait for our facial at Caudalie next week.

Kling’s new line, set to launch at the beginning of November, is a reflection of the history of GUESS. “It’s been fun to use their history and the typical iconic Guess pieces like the bustier— I’ve just done everything how I would wear it,” she tells us. Western and matador influence is apparent, but simple and elegant silhouettes composed of cozy knits, leather, and embroidery gives each piece a relevant feel. Lazy? No way. There’s a new reason to spend less time at the gym, and it’s a good one: New research shows that you can get just as effective of a workout in 20 minutes as you can in over an hour.

According to my new favorite book, The First 20 Minutes by “Phys Ed” columnist for The New York Times Gretchen Reynolds, working out for four to six four-and-a-half and a half minutes at an intense pace is equivalent to a steady pace of 90 to 120 minutes of exercise. Crazy, right?!

The Workout

A group of college students rode a stationary bike for 90 to 120 minutes at a steady pace while another group performed short intervals of 20 to 30 seconds and then rested for four minutes. They repeated this cycle four to six times for a total of two to three minutes of intense exercise.

The Results

After two weeks of repeating these exercises, both groups saw similar results; they increased their endurance and physical fitness. But surprisingly, working out for a longer period of time didn’t increase their results at a greater level.

Now It’s Your Turn

Sticking to just cardio may not be the best bang for your time. “When you have limited time, choosing between cardio and resistance training is a mistake,” Travis Steffen, a Strength and Condition Specialist and founder of  Workoutbox.com, told us. “Instead, combine the two. With an intense manual resistance circuit with very little rest between exercises, you can get both resistance training and cardio done in one shot.” Check out a 20-minute workout he provided that will get you results…and fast. All you need is a pair of dumbbells!

Cristi Christensen is the Yoga Director of Exhale in Los Angeles and she unleashes her passion by teaching a variety of classes and workshops there. She has studied with world-renowned fitness gurus and traveled the globe spreading her knowledge and enthusiasm for yoga and all things fitness. I caught up with Cristi after spending time with her at the amazing Exhale Spa retreat in Santa Monica last week. She gave me an insider perspective on practicing yoga and shared some of her health and beauty secrets.

MM: There are many different types of yoga classes available today. How do you differentiate between them and what are the most popular practices? Any tips on how to choose?

CC: There are many many different types of yoga; the key is finding the one that is right for you! Exhale’s yoga program falls under the Vinyasa style of yoga which is certainly amongst the most popular growing yoga in the U.S. Vinyasa is a rhythmic, flowing style of yoga with an emphasis in linking movement with breath. Vinyasa helps to not only build strength and endurance, but also enhances flexibility and brings the body and mind into a more relaxing, meditative state.

MM: What advice do you have for someone who has never taken a yoga class but is eager to try it?

CC: Start with a few beginner classes so that you can learn the basics of each one including the alignment techniques and the language; this way you can find the style that resonates with you. Let the teacher know you are new to class too so they can take extra good care of you!

MM: What yoga class do you suggest for the toughest physical challenge?

CC: Believe it or not, some of the most challenging classes I have taken have been Level 1 (beginner) as you are holding poses for a really long time! Level 2/3 classes usually move at a faster pace which definitely get your heart pumping and energy flowing! Vinyasa yoga is generally a very athletic practice- which will detoxify your body and take you to your edge!

MM: What are some of the benefits of yoga and what has it done for you personally?

CC: There are so many amazing benefits to this practice – physically, mentally, emotionally, even spiritually.

To name just a few…Strength, flexibility, balance, focus, youthful body and spirit, calm mind, deepen connection with self, inner peace, compassion, and joy.

Personally my yoga practice has become part of my life and lifestyle. The physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of the practice have helped me become more centered, grounded and connected into my self and my personal power. My body is as strong and subtle as it was in my athletic days and through my practice I have become more present and more joyful in each moment. My yoga practice truly feeds my mind, body and soul.

MM: Paddle boarding and surfing have become very popular and I know you enjoy mixing them with your yoga practice. How do they complement each other?

CC: Two of my passions are both yoga and surfing, and more recently I have been enjoying SUPing. There is nothing that makes you feel more alive then being totally engrossed in the present moment, and when you are in the ocean you have no choice but to be present. Yoga, in addition to building strength, body awareness and agility, helps build focus and concentration-all things you need in the water!!

MM: You have the most gorgeous hair. What products do you use to keep it shiny and healthy?

CC: Thank you! I use Pureology shampoo and conditioner. I also eat a lot of avocados and coconut oil!

MM: What are some of your favorite healthy snacks?

CC: I love Keen-wah coconut almond bars, apple slices with raw almond butter, raw kale chips, and dark chocolate!

MM: How did the idea for namasDAY develop and what do you hope people get out of it?

CC: September is National Yoga Month & namasDay is all about celebrating yoga and introducing yoga to as many people as possible around the country!

But as Maral emphasizes, “it’s not marketed for eyebrows, so, like any other chemical, you have to be careful… but it works amazingly.”

Daily Makeover: What’s the most important thing a girl should remember when applying makeup for date night?
Carmindy: I would say the number one thing women need to know when they’re going on a date, when it comes to wearing makeup, is less is more. Guys don’t want a girl that’s wearing a ton of makeup, because it looks like they’re insecure and they’re hiding something.

DM: What do you think date night makeup should look like?
C: What I always try to teach women to do is my “five-minute face.” The five-minute face basically accentuates your natural beauty without making it look like you’re wearing any makeup—it’s almost like you’re glowing from within.

DM: Let’s start with skin. How should you prep your date night face?
C: So the first thing you want to do is even out your skin tone. Do this with a little liquid foundation and use a non-latex sponge. This will allow it to blend into your skin, without looking like you’re wearing anything at all. Then you want to give yourself a sort of luminous glow.

DM: What’s your trick to a “luminous glow”?
C: One thing is for sure, you don’t want to use glitter. Glitter makes it look like you’re trying too hard. Instead, apply a shimmery highlighting cream in three key places: right underneath the eyebrow, the inside corner of the eyes, and on top of the cheekbones.  My favorite cream highlighter is the Fresh Satin Luster Face Palette ($45, Sephora.com), because it looks like nothing but your natural glow-y skin.

DM: Love. Anything else we need to know about skin?
C: Yes. Lastly, dust a light transition powder just to set your makeup—so nothing that has color in it, nothing that’s opaque, nothing that’s going to add another extra chalky layer. Whatever you do, do not take a sponge and wipe across your compact and then smear it across your face. That just makes your skin look cakey. Instead, take a fluffy powder brush and lightly sweep it across your compact, then dust it on your face.

DM: OK, that sounds easy enough. What about your eyes?
C: There’s a really easy way to do eyes for a date so it doesn’t look like you’re trying to hide anything. Define your upper lash line with a little bit of liner, and to really make your eyes pop, use an eyeliner color opposite to your iris color, which makes your eyes stand out. Just add a smidge along your upper lash line, as close to the roots as possible, so you don’t really see it. It’s just kind of giving the illusion of a thicker-looking lash line with a hint of color. Then definitely use black mascara on the top and bottom lashes for a flirty look.

DM: It’s the end of the night, and you want a kiss. What should you be wearing on your lips?
C: When it comes to lips, stay away from lip gloss, because guys do not want to kiss you if you’re wearing lip gloss. And you want to stay away from any dark shades, or any bold colors, like red. When you’re on a first date with a guy, it’s more about connecting with the person and less about putting on your bright red lipstick so you can look super cool.

I always recommend a tinted lip balm, like Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment ($22.50, Fresh.com), because it’s got like a little hint of rose to it. This will leave you with a soft lip and just a hint of color—it’s not going to be scary for a guy.

DM: Fair enough. So have you ever gone on a first date and just overdone it with the makeup?
C: Me? Never. I’m a professional.

DM: Any other words of wisdom when it comes to date night makeup?
C: The key is confidence, especially when going on a first date. You want to make it look like you don’t have a care in the world, that makeup is not important to you. That’s what’s going to get across more on a first date, not “Oh she’s wearing cat eyes and a nude lip. That’s really hot right now.” Guys don’t care about that.

“Where are the men?” my girlfriend clamored as our cocktails arrived. “Lately, the guys I’ve met are wishy-washy when it comes to planning the date. If we meet in my area of town, they ask me to pick the venue because they don’t know the area – like Yelp isn’t a thing. And when I offered the last guy restaurant suggestions, he asked what kind of food they serve. What kind of man asks a woman out and makes her not only plan the date, but make sure he’s comfortable with the cuisine, too?”

I’ve had my own run-ins with the boys, lately, as well.  One asked me out for drinks and then told me to tell him when and where to meet, right after he let me know what area of town he works in. Another had my cell and email address after asking a friend to set us up, but chose instead to connect with me on Facebook leaving his number. I should call him if I want to go out, he messaged. If I wasn’t interested in going out with him, why would I have given him my cell and email address? I did not call. The last man I dated told me straight out he wanted to meet me, asked me what I prefer to drink, asked me what part of the city I live in, and set a date, time and place. We dated for months.

I realized I’m not looking for a guy. I’m looking for a man – a confident man who knows what he wants and how to treat a woman. I need to feel feminine. I enjoy being a woman and I enjoy men who enjoy dating grown women.

So while I join the New York City single woman chorus in a round of “Where are the men?” from time to time, I know it can’t be entirely their fault. We all felt we were supposed to be equal in the dating world, so we meet half way and offer to split the check. We all compromised too much. Men got softer. Women got harder. And we’re all left wondering what we’re doing wrong.

My new approach to dating? If you want to date a man, be a woman. Being a lady, I have found, brings out the best in gentlemen. When they are given permission to be manly men, they rise up. And if they don’t? Well who wants a guy who can’t rise up to your feminine wiles? Here are my tips for the first date:

1. A man plans the date. A woman appreciates the plan. If he says: “What do you want to do?” answer with: “I’ll let you plan the date.” Often enough, they are pleased to hear that. They want to know they are in charge of the first date. It makes them feel like a man. When a man does plan the date, a woman is sure to mention all the details he took into consideration to make it a lovely evening, and thanks him graciously.
2. If he says: “Let’s meet half way” or “There’s a great little bar around the corner from my apartment,” say: “No, thank you.”  A man makes the date convenient for the woman he’s asked out. A man doesn’t inform a woman about where he lives or where he works. He knows it’s irrelevant. He’ll find a venue near his date. I’ve actually said: “I think you’re adorable and I’d love to go out with you but it seems like you don’t really want to date me. When you want to take me out, call me.” That man called the next night and asked me out to a great new sushi place in my neighborhood. We dated for a couple of months.
3. A man is confident, even if it means he has to try a little harder. When a guy says: “Let me know if you want to go out. Here’s my number,” don’t call. A man would just call you. Or at least text you. If you do want to go out with him, look him straight in the eyes and say: “I would like to go on a date with you. Here’s my card.” And walk away. A man will call.
4. If you’re not sure whether or not it’s a “date,” he’s a guy. A man is always clear about his intentions. This does not mean his intentions are polite. But he’ll be clear.
5. If he says “It’s just casual, so like don’t get all dressed up or anything,” he’s a guy. A man wants to date a woman who is dressed like a woman out on date.

If you want to date a man, be a woman.  Be a strong, confident woman, but be a woman.  A retro-modern approach to dating may not be for every woman, but man, do I love it.

It’s no secret that great products can make or break a hairstyle. But did you know that using the perfect hairbrush can do more than half the work? The right brush can give you mega volume, eliminate frizz, or turn your locks into one silky, straight creation. We spoke to Nexxus Creative Director Kevin Mancuso, who gave us the 411 on hairbrushes, to make sure we never use the wrong brush again.

1. To Neaten Curly Or Kinky Hair

When it comes to tight curls, the trick to smoothing out your locks is to loosen things up. “If you have tight curls or curls with a lot of kink, the wider you’ll want the spaces between bristles,” Kevin said.

He recommends Denman Classic Styling Brushes ($10.75, Soap.com) with six to nine rows of bristles. “These brushes feature white, nylon pin-like bristles,” Kevin said. “It is great for most hair textures, except fine or thin textures or hair that has low density.”

2. To Get Sleek, Straight Hair

My heart goes out to the big-haired girl who wants a sleek, straight look. It can be near impossible to get a frizz-free blowout. “The best way to control a curl when manipulating it with a brush or your fingers is to first care for your hair with the right shampoo and conditioner, followed by styling products that form hair into brush-able curls,” Kevin said.

“For almost any hair type or length, the Denman Paddle Brush ($11.95, Folica.com) is great to help detangle hair and very easy to use” for a fast blow out—it creates a “smooth, sleek look,” Kevin said. “This brush is great for most hair types and textures, fine or thin hair textures, or hair that has low density.”

3. To Detangle (Wet) Hair

It’s not uncommon to step out of the shower with knotty, messy hair, and unless you’re Heidi Klum, brushing it out with your fingers is not an option. “Brushes that have wider spaced bristles are best to help detangle hair, however in some instances, a comb works best for detangling. Brushes that have natural bristles, flexible nylon bristles, padded/cushioned brushes and bristles are gentler on wet hair.”

One of his favorites? Mason Pearson Nylon & Boar Bristle Brushes ($115, Sleekhair.com), which are “medium cushion brushes with natural bristles and single nylon quills that provide good grip and control for smoothing hair.”

4. To Get More Voluminous Hair

Tired of the Jennifer Aniston look, and longing for body? There’s a brush for that. While big, round brushes are great for smoothing fly-aways, little, round brushes are the trick to adding more texture.

“In general, round brushes are best for adding shape and volume; the smaller the diameter of the brush, the more bend and wave you’ll add to the curl,” Kevin said. He really likes YS Park Brush ($44, Precisionshears.com) from Japan, because it has natural boar and nylon bristles that give a glossy look, without losing volume in your hair.

Knowing what brush to use is great, but there’s one question that still remains: How much do you need to spend on a brush?

Hairbrushes well over $100 (outrageous even for a beauty writer!) have crossed our desks, and while we were shocked at the price, we soon learned that you get what you pay for.

“I find that a quality brush is worth the investment—there is a noticeable difference in the way quality brushes are balanced,” Kevin said. “It’s easy to find a less expensive brush that ‘does the job,’ but most of those brushes use bristles that are either too flexible, bristles that are not flexible enough or lose their bristles.”

Matthew McConaughey was among the many Camila fans in the crowded hotspot and lovingly looked on as Camila posed for photos. Later, Matthew goofed off by snapping a few photos of the crowd. The couple then waded through the overflowing room to their private table.

The room was surrounded by lighted palm trees and Brazilian inspired cocktails were flowing. We also enjoyed the live music from indie-pop band, Lemonade! Hollywood A-listers included Solange Knowles, Cocoa Rocha, Kelly Rutherford, and Louise Roe.

Almond Eyes

Almond eyes are the ideal shape to work with because you can do almost anything with them. “You always want to take eyeliner from the inside corner, past the outside corner, wing it–just to draw attention to the beauty of that eye shape,” said makeup artist Susan Posnick. Her other tip is to use color eyeshadow on the top lid, as this will help open up the eye.

Deep Set Eyes

The goal with deep set eyes is to help pop them open with light colors. “Keep your light color on the lid so that you’re bringing the eye forward and keeping it open,” Susan said. “You could also apply a highlighting arch close to the lash line and use a warm color under the brow bone” to create a multi-dimensional look. Lastly, use a thin smudged line close to the lash line to make lashes look longer.

Close Set Eyes

The biggest trick with close set eyes it to keep the lightest colors on the inner corner of your eye. “You want to graduate your color from light to deep, going from inside to outside,” Susan said. “This is going to give the illusion that the eyes are further apart.” When it comes to liner, only swipe it across two-thirds of your eye, like Ginnifer Goodwin did, because it helps eyes look further apart.

Wide Set Eyes

According to Susan, who’s applied shadow to models and celebrities everywhere, wide set eyes are the easiest eyes to work with. You can line them anyway you like, much like an almond-shaped eye. “Most people are afraid of deeper color in the inside corner, but you can do that with a wide set eye,” Susan said. “It can make the nose look more angular and interesting.”

Hooded Eyes

A hooded eye is where you can barely see the lid, like Blake Lively’s eyes. With this shape, start by applying your warmer, contouring color on the base of your brow bone and blend it up to the eyebrow. Then take your lightest color right up underneath the brow, to create a shape. Lastly, apply that same light color, starting on your lid, and sweeping vertically. “With a hooded eye, people see your eyes horizontally,” Susan said. “When you apply shadow vertically you’re opening up the eyes.”

Prominent Eyes

With a prominent eye-shape, sometimes known as a bulging eyes, it’s best to stick to nudes and neutrals, Susan said. “You’re trying to softly recede a prominent eye, but if you go too dark it’s going to look too obvious, and if you go too light it’s going to look more bulging.” If you’re using bright colors, apply them below your bottom lashes so you’re creating a shift of focus. Susan also recommends skipping eyeliner and opting for false lashes instead. “When you have longer lashes, it will set the eye back.”

Droopy Eyes

Droopy eyes are when the outer corners of the eyes pull down–something that happens frequently with hooded eyes and in older women. “Keep the outside of the eye extra light, so the focus is upward,” Susan said. “With liner, I like to really extend it up and out, creating a cat eye of sorts, so that outside corner is pulled away from the eye completely and lifts it up.”

Tips in case you do get a little too much sun…it happens to the best of us:

1. Take an aspirin. It helps diminish the redness and swelling of a sunburn and most of all eases the pain.
2. Use a cold milk compress on your skin. Soak a washcloth is a mixture of half ice water and half milk and apply to the skin.
3. Apply the Greek yogurt you usually eat for breakfast, and smooth it over your burn. After letting set for 15 min apply some aloe vera.
4. It is important to stay hydrated! Your sunburn has caused your skin to lose a lot of moisture so drink plenty of H20 or some fresh squeezed lemonade.

We sometimes burn because we’re not sure when to reapply our sunscreen, so here is a good rule to follow. Take the amount of SPF you are wearing and multiply it by 10…that is how many minutes your sunscreen will last until you need to reapply. (15 SPF x 10= 150 minutes).

Top 10 Hairstyles For One-Shoulder Dresses

In honor of the London 2012 Olympics, we wanted to celebrate one of our favorite things about British culture…the fashion!  I just recently traveled to the UK where I picked up a few new things and lusted after some British designers’ items.  Here are my picks to get the “London Look.”  Cheers!

1. Karen Millen Colorblock Sculptural Dress, $350
I found this gorgeous colorblocked shift at the must-see tourist destination Harrod’s department store in London.  It’s ideal for day to night and has a sexy and flattering fit.

“It” Girl and former hedge fund manager Julie Macklowe is a regular on the New York City socialite scene and recently founded vbeaute, one of the best new skincare lines available (her fab products are made in the same lab as La Prairie products and sell for a fraction of the price). As a mom, philanthropist, entrepreneur, surfer and girl-about-town, she has many best-kept secrets, tips, and experiences to share. I caught up with Julie to find out the details on her new venture, her personal skincare regimen, fashion faves and more!

Melissa Meyers: What inspired you to start a skincare line?
Julie Macklowe: I was on my way to Europe for a wedding; TSA authorities took my toiletries. Then of course I paid a fortune for the “best” products in Paris only to end up breaking out in hives. I decided this was never going to happen to me or any other women again, so I sketched out the It Kit and found the best lab in Switzerland, the CRB lab, to source the very best botanicals based on a new active [called] the Swiss Alpine Rose – a flower that grows high in the swiss alps, dies and rejuvenates itself each spring just like your skin, and combined it with a patented BioCellular tri-peptide, the latest anti-age technology. That wasn’t enough though as I am very sensitive, I made the line Paraben free, fragrance free, gluten free, nut and oat free so almost anyone can use the vbeaute skincare system. Last, I was sick of paying too much, even though one of the world’s best labs makes our products, the line ranges from $18-$165 so that hopefully everyone can afford terrific skincare.

MM: What makes vbeaute different from other skincare brands out there?
JM: Vbeaute is TSA- friendly and contains the latest in anti-aging Swiss Alpine Rose botanical technology.

MM: What are your best hints for packing and traveling?
JM: All you need to do is shut/bring the It Kit. It’s lightweight and plastic and we minimized all packaging materials so it scans right through security. I recommend always using a carry-on, plan one set of color tones, either black and grays or browns and purples and mix and match outfits. I also believe in rolling to get the maximum amount of clothes in, and wearing vibram shoes to run which take almost no space at all.

MM: What’s your daily beauty regimen?
JM: Vbeaute all the way for skincare. I use the same routine morning and evening- takes me 60 seconds, it’s very simple: cleanse daily with evidence eraser, a pump of undercover agent anti age serum, a pump of lite up brightening agent, mix into palms and apply all over, a dab of buying time every day cream and a bit more if its a drier climate or winter  and eye never anti wrinkle eye cream, above and below my eyes. I use rub off all over my body and on my face 2-3 time a week to exfoliate and evidence eraser to cleanse my body. I actually use buying time every day cream as a body moisturizer — I want my entire body young not just my face!

MM: You are very experimental with your hair. What are some of your favorite styles? Must-have haircare products?
JM: I have never been afraid of taking risks. You can go on patrickmcmullan.com and look at some pictures from vintage 2004-2005, super scary beehives…not sure what I was thinking then. I love using Terax conditioner and shampoo and a squirt or two of Bumble and Bumble Prep – I don’t use much else. I love those Mason Pearson brushes too.

MM: You’ve been named one of the Best Dressed New Yorkers. How would you describe your style? What’s your every day go-to outfit? Name one item every woman needs in her wardrobe. Who are your favorite designers?
JM: I don’t believe in dressing down, ever. My go-to outfit depends on the day, my mood and the weather. I like wearing everything from ball gowns to leather biker shorts and a tee shirt, it’s all mood based really, depending on how I feel and what I think is interesting to wear in a given season. I love getting things made by fabulous designers, but who wouldn’t? I’ve been fortunate enough to have had one of a kind dresses made by Jason Wu, Chris Benz, Dolce and Gabbana and Zang Toi to name a few. I guess I’d rather own one or two fabulous things from a given season than a lot of things I’ll never wear again. When I look at fashion pieces they should be memorable but still wearable 10 years later.

MM: As someone who is often photographed, do you have any tips for how to look best in photos?
JM: Have a shot of tequila before you take a photo — always helps me out! I’m the worst at looking normal in photographs, I sometimes hate my husband because he’s always the single most handsome man in the world when he gets photographed. I actually don’t think he’s taken a bad picture in his life; you should really be asking him this question not me.

MM: What do you do to look extra special for a red carpet event or gala?
JM: I have a make-up artist Nico Guillis and a hair guy who is amazing, David Von Cannon, who does major events. Often though I do it myself, minimal makeup and hope the dress speaks the loudest and I let the dress speak for itself. I don’t love wearing a ton of makeup and prefer a natural look unless I’m going insane. On a daily basis I wear vbeaute, a zinc SPF, a tad of mascara and a light gloss. I believe if you use great skincare products you don’t need to wear a lot of makeup as your skin tone tends to even out with good products.

MM: You’re an investor in Bauble Bar, one of our favorite e-commerce accessories sites. What are some of your favorite ways to accessorize?
JM: I love all of baublebar.com and the Erickson Beamon collection was one of my favorites. They are amazing and I love their stuff. I think its either about big earrings with a cuff or a necklace and lots of rings — most of my rings are made by my friend MAUD (Maud Cabot) who does Steven Tyler’s jewelry – she sells at Jeffrey and Maxfields and is amazing!

MM: What’s one item you can’t leave home without?
JM: My iPhone and a sample of vbeaute to pass out — okay two, but one is small.

MM: Your Hamptons home has been featured in Hamptons Magazine and Harper’s Bazaar. Any tips for decorating or entertaining?
JM: Go minimal. Less is more is my philosophy in life.

MM: What do you do to stay healthy and in shape?
JM: I run barefoot in vibrams. Probably run 4-7 miles 4 to 5 times a week and I do ashtanga yoga, surf if it’s summer (paddle board if no waves), ski in winter (I’m from Aspen and love skiing), lift free weights, do abs and calorie count (I recommend the caloriecount.com app to keep from eating junkfood nonstop). I’m a bit of a health nut although I seem to think of myself as sedentary since it feels like I’m often in front of a computer working. I love long runs on the beach and being outside.

MM: What’s your guilty pleasure?
JM: Is this where 50 Shades of Grey comes into play?

MM: What’s your next project?
JM: Making vbeaute a household name.

It seems like every woman who has tried a self tanner has a similar story to tell…they don’t like the smell, they look orangey, the color came out looking unnatural, streaky or uneven. Before you begin your tanning, here are some insider tips to ensure you get your best glow on:

• It is important to exfoliate your skin before applying.   Pay special attention to your knees and elbows.
• Make sure your skin is completely dry before applying.
• Apply a barrier like Vaseline onto your fingernails, toenails and cuticles to avoid discoloration in these areas.
• Remember to start at your feet and work your way up.  This way you won’t crease the color by bending over.

Have a self tanning disaster?  It happens to the best of us, no worries!  If you see that your tanning application wasn’t as flawless as you thought there is no need to panic.  To get rid of any streaks you may have you can simply combine a few tablespoons of baking soda and some fresh lemon juice until it forms a paste and apply it to the necessary areas.  The baking soda acts as a light exfoliate while the acid from the lemon juice removes any excess tanner your skin may not have absorbed.

Summer vacation is supposed to be about rest and relaxation, but when you’re used to always being “on,” trying to enjoy your free time can be stressful!  Dr. Robert Glatter, otherwise known as “Dr. 911″ and the on-set doctor for Gossip Girl and other shows and movies,  gave us some helpful tips for making the most of your summer vacays.  His advice will help you enjoy your time off, stress-free!

1. Keep to routines

Even though you may be on vacation, setting up routines may actually help to provide some structure to avoid feeling stressed. For example, if sleeping late makes you feel like you are wasting your day, then setting up a routine schedule to wake up and go to sleep at specific times may allow you to feel less stress when scheduling vacation activities.

2. Breath deeply

Focusing on breathing is an important way to relieve your mind of its many distractions. Slow, deep abdominal breathing for just 5-10 minutes can help to lower your blood pressure, heart rate, and clear your mind. This is can be accomplished by focusing on nothing else but your breathing, listening to and feeling the air rush in and out of your lungs.

3. Think positive

Making a conscious effort to focus on positive thoughts, whether it’s a relationship, object or idea can help to make your vacation time more satisfying. Focus to help reduce racing and intrusive thoughts. By focusing on a particular mantra, your mind can isolate and concentrate on a single object thought or task and block out outside pressures and stressors.

4. Compartmentalize Stress Provokers

Being able to effectively deal with your anxiety starts with identifying stressors, and learning to compartmentalize them. Simply realizing that there are some stressful things and situations that you cannot control will help you to actually let go of some of your stress.

5. Schedule time to check emails and perform work-related activities

In an age of constant connectivity with laptops, tablets and smart phones, it’s important to reserve time each day to check and respond to emails. It’s important to let people know you are away, and will only be checking messages a few times during the day. Unless an emergency develops, resist the urge to respond throughout the day to these messages. Knowing that your day isn’t focused on email or social media, should allow you to more effectively spend time with your friends and family.

6. Relax by engaging in physical activities

Engaging in activities that are both physically and mentally challenging may be more effective in helping you to truly relax your mind and let go of stress. For example, reading a book on a beach may be relaxing to some people. Activities that are more physically and mentally challenging may help to achieve more meaningful levels of relaxation on a vacation.

7. Practice aromatherapy

Having summery scents available in the form of lotions, gels, infusers or candles may help make your summer vacation more pleasant and relaxing. Citrus-based scents as well as flowery-based sprays, oils, or candles can help make you feel more relaxed and calm amidst busy days activities.

Dr. Glatter is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine, is affiliated with both Lenox Hill and Southampton Hospitals, and is quickly able to assess or triage any medical or surgical problem in adult and pediatric patients, making appropriate arrangements should an ailment require more emergent treatment and care.

Core Fusion at Exhale Mind Body Spa
Core Fusion at Exhale Spa is my number one go-to workout.  I’ve been doing it for so many years now…ever since the Lotte Berk days with Fred De Vito and Elisabeth Halfpapp who are now the Founders of Exhale. This amazing barre class gives you a full-body workout and focuses on the core. The workout really gets results by offering a variety of exercises that include many of the disciplines used in pilates, yoga and ballet. If you have never experienced it before, make sure to go to a beginner class.  The workout never gets easier but I promise will change your body! Exhale Spa has locations all over the country.

Soul Cycle
It’s impossible to write a workout article without mentioning the ever-growing popularity of spin classes, especially SoulCycle. These high-energy classes have a cult following and are a celeb favorite. They incorporate cardio cycling with core work and light weights to build upper body strength, all in a zen environment.  The inspirational instructors are motivational and have some of the best music playlists in town. Studios are popping up everywhere in New York and LA. 

Barry’s Bootcamp
Bootcamp classes are another fitness trend and Barry does it best with his challenging mix of extreme cardio (running on a treadmill) alternating with heavy weight work. This fave of Kim Kardashian and Katie Couric claims to be “the best workout in the world” and after trying it, I would agree that it was one of the toughest workouts ever! I think a great class for die-hard exercise enthusiasts or people who are in serious training mode. Studios are located in New York, California, Tennessee, and even Europe.

Zumba at Alvin Ailey
It sure is a treat to work out right at the Alvin Ailey theater in one of their dance studios. This Zumba class has a huge NYC following that includes dancers and broadway actors as well as anyone who wants to have fun while following the dance routines of famed instructor Ben Byrd. This latin-inspired blend of dance and cardio is a blast, although I did feel like I had two left feet compared to some the regulars in the class.

Punch Fitness
Punch Fitness Center is a one-on-one personal training center that offers the ultimate physical challenge through kickboxing, boxing, and weight training (yes…it is a killer, no joke)! This gorgeous pink gloss is shiny but not sticky, and has a hint of sparkle.  It’s also great over lipstick.

This is one of my all-time favorite pinks.  It’s a full coverage lipcolor (goes on opaque) that is a bit mod.  I like to wear it with pink gloss on top.

Revlon ColorBurst Lipbutter in Sugar Frosting, $7.49
This fabulous drugstore find is comparable to the department store brand at a fraction of the price.  It feels amazing on your lips, has no fragrance, and provides a lovely light pink color.

L’oreal Colour Riche Lip Balm in Pink Satin, $7.99
Another lipstick steal, L’oreal’s more moisturizing version of their best-selling Colour Riche lipstick has a lighter formula with a gorgeous pale pink shade.  It looks beautiful on fair skin!

Maybelline Superstay 14 Hour Lipstick in Perpetual Peony, $8.99
I love how long-lasting this lipstick is…sometimes I am too busy to re-apply!  The pink shade is universally flattering.

Bite Beauty Lush Lip Tint in Lychee, $24
Bite has developed a formula that contains the super antioxidant reservatrol, also found in red wine. This great-tasting pale pink shade is perfect for medium or olive complexions.

I am a true reality TV addict and so excited to see Bravo’s Real Housewives of New York return tonight with a highly anticipated new season and cast! Aviva Drescher, Carole Radziwill and Heather Thomson are the new Housewives on the scene. The smart, accomplished and sophisticated new ladies are sure to make an interesting addition to the show.  Aviva is a stunning, well-educated New York City native, philanthropist, mother of four and an amputee (she lost her leg in a terrible accident as a child).  Carole is a three-time Emmy award winning journalist and New York Times best-selling author as well as the widow of Jackie O.’s nephew.  Heather is the founder of the successful shapewear company Yummie Tummie and has worked as a designer and stylist with Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and Sean “Diddy” Combs. I caught up with the reality TV newbies to get the inside scoop on them and what they do to stay perpetually camera ready.  Read on RHONY lovers…you will be psyched to watch the premiere tonight on Bravo at 9 p.m. EST!

Melissa Meyers: How did the opportunity to become a new Real Housewife come up and why did you decide to do it?
Aviva Drescher: A childhood friend of mine in PR named Jake Spitz urged me to let Bravo interview me. Reluctantly, I did the interview and I was handed a contract. After one month of no sleep and thinking I could not do the show, I decided: “no risk, no reward.” I took the gamble that helping other amputees by using the TV platform would outweigh the consequences of becoming a caricature.
Carole Radziwill: I know Andy Cohen and we were having dinner last summer and he asked if I’d be interested in doing the show. My immediate  response was “Umm…no.” I didn’t think he was serious until he sent me an email the following morning asking me to think about it. So I did. First, I looked at it as a job opportunity…an odd job made more interesting by the fact that I am a writer. I get that it’s a risk, but I’m not afraid to put myself in different situations and this was one very different situation. Sometimes you just have to say yes to what the universe is putting in front of you.
Heather Thomson: I was sitting at my desk and I got a call from a casting director saying they were kicking my name around and would I be interested in joining the cast of RHONY.  My first instinct was wow, thanks so much for thinking of me, but I initially didn’t think it was the right choice for me or my family.  However, as I learned more, and understood that they wanted to change the direction of the show, I auditioned and it started to peak my interest. When I really thought about it, being given this incredible opportunity on Bravo would allow me to bring real issues that working mothers face on a daily basis to the forefront. Raising my two children and being a wife to my amazing husband, starting and running my own fashion business Yummie Tummie, creating awareness for charities that are near and dear to me and doing it all, while trying my best to be glamorous and balanced is all I could ever hope to achieve.

MM: What was your favorite moment from the season?
AD: My three favorite moments of the season were charity related. One was an event that I created to benefit One Step Ahead (this charity helps pay for prosthetics for children who can’t afford them and creates sports opportunities for them). It was a spin class that we created into a fundraising event. The second was Heather Thomson’s charity event benefiting children who need liver transplants. There is one special experience at that event that I NEVER thought I could/would do! Tune in to find out what it is! My third favorite experience was giving a surprise gift to Jake, a very special boy who was born missing two limbs above the knee. Tune in to see our special time together.
CR: My favorite moment was the finale party. It was at Norwood, a private arts club on 14th Street. We were there to celebrate the completion of my new book, The Widows Guide to Sex & Dating. Yay!!
HT: There is a particular episode that focuses on an event that I am personally involved in which helps to raise awareness and money for my charity, The Kellner Liver Pediatric Foundation, a charity that is extremely personal and dear to me. I think that it s by far the most special moment for me this season because it the very reason that I wanted to go on the RHONY journey from the beginning.

MM: Give us a hint as to what juicy drama we are in store for this season. What is the nature of your relationship now with the new housewives? The other originals?
AD: I knew Luann for several years before I joined RHONY. I had met Sonja once through my ex-husband since they are friends. There are rich new storylines to look forward to. Lots of gossip and drama! It wouldn’t be RHONY without it! It was NOT “old girls” versus “new girls.” Some people organically got along and some did not. The one hint I can give you (I don’t want to spoil any surprises!) is that lots of relationships CHANGE throughout the season as we all get to know one another with time and travel.
CR: We bonded in the way people do who go through an intense experience together. Like Sisters-in-Arms. [The originals are] more like moms you love but are sometimes embarrassed by.
HT: You will have to tune in and watch the show to see the details, but I can tell you that there is a lot of drama this season. What viewers don’t expect are some of the close bonds of friendship that are developed out of the drama both with new and returning cast members.
